Well, boys and girls, the National Education Association is at it again. Since last we met here, the NEA has held its national convention and given its marching orders to its membership and to those lobbying forces that take the NEA ideals and sell them to willing members of Congress. And I do mean sell, ladies and gentlemen. The NEA means m-o-n-e-y to those members of Congress who do as their told. And what has the NEA told them for this next Congressional year? What does the NEA want Congress to do for them? Here’s just a partial list of the lobbying goals for next year’s Congress: · Federal Funding for public school child care and before-and after-school programs · Big spending for school counselors · School-based health care for children · National health care · Reparations to African Americans · Taxpayer funding of federal elections · National holiday for Cesar Chavez If you’re like me, you might be asking yourself: a national holiday for Cesar Chavez? What the heck does that have to do with the NEA and the education of our children? Well, in a nutshell, here’s the answer: it doesn’t, and it doesn’t have to have anything at all to do with education to be of interest to the NEA. Education is only one pie that they want their leftwing fingers in, my friends. They’re also heavily into feminist causes, gay rights, and affirmative action. And when the NEA calls, millions of due paying members are forced to follow….whether they agree with the agenda or not. It’s a racket of the first degree, and I’m here to call it what it is: extortion. Teachers are forced to join and pay dues, without a say, a vote, or even a clue as to what causes those dues support. Or, sometimes more importantly, the causes they DON’T support. Such as homeschooling, school choice, tuition tax credits, school vouchers, and English as our official language. They’re a powerful lobby, a well funded and well educated one. And they’re funding is bottomless and limitless, coming, as it does, from its members. So what are we to do? I have no idea. But knowing the problem is the beginning of solving it. Or so they say…….
